Awls are immeasurably handy tools -- they puncture holes into a variety of materials. They can also be used to enlarge existing holes. In needle felting, you might want to pre-puncture a hole before glueing in the eyes. You can also pre-puncture holes in thicker felt, canvas or leather in preparation for sewing. Awls have a thin, tapered shaft with a very sharp point. The straight handled awl has a slightly thinner shaft. (currently out of stock) The bulbous awl has a slightly thicker shaft.
